Objectives

From a theoretical standpoint, the fundamental properties of information within Information Science might be expected to be closely related to those of signs, that is, Semiotics. Following Peirce, Brier defines semiotics and proposes that it is a necessary supplement to theories of information as such (Cybersemiotics; Why Information is not enough). The objective of the Roundtable is thus to examine some of the critical conditions for a semiotic view of information and contrast it with other philosophical views of information..

Participants are encouraged to present their views on different possible models for the interactions between the fields of Information Science and Semiotics, convergences and divergences. A unification is not necessarily possible or desirable, but the discussion of their relation might suggest new approaches to information that might combine the strength of both, including perspectives on meaning, esthetics and ethics.
