Emergent systems, information and society

Track

Moderators

Wolfgang Hofkirchner, Vienna University of Technology (ISIS, BCSSS, and Leibniz-Sozietät der Wissenschaften zu Berlin)
Hans-Jörg Kreowski, University of Bremen (Leibniz-Sozietät der Wissenschaften zu Berlin)

Objectives

Responsible science of information, information society and information technology is key to designing a humane future. A scientific understanding of the generation and utilisation of information in nature, society and with the help of artifacts is a transdisciplinary enterprise.

Complexity thinking as pursued by systems approaches seems best suited to harness transdisciplinarity for responsibility. The Track will discuss the mutual relationship of systems approaches and sciences of information, in particular, the fields of Informatics and Society, Social informatics, ICTs and Society.

Subjects and scope

Topics to be discussed are questions like the following:

What are existing and possible contributions of systems approaches to the fields of natural information processing, of information processing on the human level, and of information systems? What are existing and possible contributions of informatics and computer science to the field of systems sciences? What is the difference between the systems concepts used in systems engineering and information systems, on the one hand, and physico-chemical, life and social sciences, on the other? What is the relation between IT and society? What are the main processes of information generation in society and how are they related to each other?

Format

That Track will consist of

  1. presentations of invited papers
  2. presentations of accepted papers
  3. the discussion on the establishment, supported by the ISIS, the BCSSS, and the Leibniz-Sozietät der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, of a working group on the topic

Target groups

Experts in systemics as well as informatics and society. Members of ISIS, BCSSS, and the Leibniz-Sozietät der Wissenschaften zu Berlin. Independent academics or those who are members of other groups are welcome!
